Riding Bikes!

Today I journeyed about my town on by bicycle with two of my friends. The ride was for no reason other than to have fun. We enjoyed the fresh air, the speed, each others company. My casual observations indicate that an increasing number of people are riding bikes in Frederick. One could call it a positive social trend.

Using a bicycle is one of the most sustainable and efficient forms of transportation. No oil or coal is burned to power your bicycle. Yes, the manufacture of bicycles uses resources, but far fewer than automobiles. If one works near where they live, especially in urban areas, its not unsual for cycling to be faster than using a personal automobile.

It has been my experiance that relying on your own power to move your own machine is incredibly empowering. The folks I rode with today and I can fix almost any problem that occurs on our bikes. Something that can be difficult with the modern automobile. One shouldn't forget the nearly complete lack of regulations for bicycles. It is a form of transportation outside the scope of the state's control.

It is the freedom, the fun and the minimal environmental impact of a bicycle that pushes me to keep riding and, it seems, draws ever more people to the practice.
